Just heard the shocking news of Morocco's devastating earthquake today. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the area near Marrakesh city killing more than 600 people and many injured.

I wonder how these earthquakes actually happen? What happens underneath the surface of earth all of a sudden and why are the quakes not predictable even with the latest technology we have.

Earthquakes, one of nature's oldest and most destructive forces, have erased ancient civilizations and continue to reshape our planet even today. These seismic events, caused by the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates, can have catastrophic consequences for human lives and the environment.

Each whole number increase on the scale represents a tenfold increase in the amplitude of seismic waves and approximately 31.6 times more energy released.
