All this culminated in huge psychological damage to his political capital, which was irreversible. A generation of fans who had waited for him to lead had nowhere to go.

In the villages, in the delta districts, and in the deep south constituencies where masses preside, Haasan's name generated respect but not votes.

The "Full-Time vs. Part-Time" Problem

While Vijay retired from cinema entirely to prove his singular focus, Haasan attempted something far more complicated; he tried to be a political heavyweight and a superstar actor at the same time.

He hosted Bigg Boss Tamil on television and shot major blockbusters like Vikram and ran a political party – simultaneously, which somewhere disappointed the voters and created doubts regarding Kamal Haasan's commitment and seriousness in delivering the significant political transformation he advocates in his speeches.

But they were politically inexperienced in the granular, unglamorous work of caste equations, village-level canvassing, and local relationship-building. Candidates were left to fend for themselves.

The Final Act of Surrender

After losing his own seat in Coimbatore South in the 2021 Tamil Nadu state elections, MNM failed to win a single assembly seat (MLA) or parliamentary constituency (MP).

Haasan made a choice that effectively ended MNM as an independent political force. He accepted a Rajya Sabha seat from the DMK — the very establishment he had promised to depose — in exchange for serving as a star campaigner rather than a contestant in 2026.

Against Haasan's urban insularity: TVK's grassroots infrastructure extended into Tamil Nadu's smallest panchayats. The fan club network, painstakingly converted into a political apparatus over years, gave TVK a presence where MNM never managed to establish one.
